"His Calling" a novel by Jason J. Cross
62His Calling
How "His Calling" came to life!
Well, as I am sure you already know, I wrote a book that is now published. This was a big achievement for me. I wrote many thing in the past – some stories long enough to be considered a novel – but nothing ever came with it. As a matter of fact a lot of them have been lost forever and only exist in my memory and the memory of those who read it.
This book is different though. This one I felt compelled and pushed to write. As you may or may not know me and my wife are filmmakers, so my original idea for this story is dramatically different from what we got here. The idea was originally suppose to be a short spoof off of Charlie's Angels but grew into something more.
Last year we had a premiere party for a short film we did with our church, Gateway City Church, and at that time our actress, her sister and a friend came up to me and said they were “Jesus' Angels” then struck a pose like Charlie's Angels but a little bit different. I thought this would be a great idea for a little 5 minute short film. A bunch of ideas came to mind but I didn't get a chance to work on them cause we were busy promoting our film and other things in life that get in the way.
When I finally got ready to write the script and got this idea that kept gnawing at me that I couldn't get rid of. It was and idea that I kept feeling was too big for me to accomplish with the resources I have at my disposal. No matter how hard I tried to try to push it aside and get working on the 5 minute script the more it kept coming back to me.
This is when I got this idea to write it as a novel. Now, as I said before, I use to write this type of narrative all the time but haven't done it in many years cause I have been writing things in script form. So I figured why not.
Now this is the cool part. I kept feeling doubts while I was writing this. I kept feeling like this story is too big for me to do because I have such limited funds and time to work on it. I kept feeling like there is no way I can afford to make this into a film and my time would be better spent working on films that I did have time for and could afford to make.
Now I read a lot and since I have a total time of 4 hours in travel time a day, to and from work, I had plenty of time to read and write. There was a total of 5 times I put this story aside with the full intentions of putting it on a back burner while I worked on something else and 5 times with 5 different Christian books I came upon the same line – though it varied a little bit – which was, “Do what you do best, and let God do the rest.” And the amazing thing was that I always came upon that line at the same time I had completely decided to not work on this story any more.
Anywho, to bring this blog to an end, I finished the story and my wonderful wife suggested that I get it published. I wasn't too sure but my wife is very persistent – God bless her. So a few months later I had it published and I have gotten some great reviews from people who have read it. I wish all of them would post it on Amazon to help the book sales but that's the way it goes. I'm just glad people seem to really enjoy it.
What do you think?
